A lot more producers and production teams are being comfortable with putting out beat tapes. Once upon a time it was considered not a good move financially because a lot of producers looked at a beat tape with the mentality of “well, there could be a beat on there that someone may have wanted to buy, but now the beat is everywhere.” Fortunately for fans, some producers are saying “fuck it”, and want the world to hear what they can do. Memory Garden, by Astereae is blissful to say the least. It’s a project that’s not meant for you to bob your head aggressively or dab to. It’s a album to put your headphones on and vibe out to. “Signal”, the first cut, is smooth mellow drums over a low fidelity bass guitar and a warpy soundbed of pads. “Existence”, the drums pick up a little more and a swarm of reverse pianos surround the track from there on out. “Aberration”, “Good for Now”, and “Float Face” are a few more tracks on this project that stand out. It’s good to hear an album that makes you want to relax and chill for the day or weekend. This is one of them.
