New EP: Awon: For The Grimy
Small towns always have their hero and Awon is dead set on putting Newport News, Virginia on the map for Underground Hip Hop. Awon was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Newport News, Virginia with his family as a small child to escape the madness of the city. One thing he was able to bring along was a sincere love of The Hip Hop Culture and he was able to hone his skills on the mic to become a prolific lyricist of the modern Underground Hip Hop scene. With a buzz abroad through several releases on independent international labels Awon now seeks refuge in his own home armed with a Mac Book Pro and a mic to create a nostalgic EP called For the Grimy. Inspired by raw emcees from every Era of Hip Hop Awon pounds away on tracks with the direction of destroying anything in his path of becoming a star. Beginning with MVP and ending with the track Undefeated it is clear that a theme of Sports plays throughout the project. Newport News is the home of number one draft picks in multiple sports and since some view Hip Hop as “The Game” Awon deliberately portrays himself as the number one draft pick emcee. Released on awon.bandcamp.com today listeners should pick up this grimy piece of the real to taste a bit of what Hip Hop is supposed to sound like.
