The origins of Ugly Heores stems from Apollo Brown wanting to do a heavy blue collar album that paints a real picture of life out there. Not a gangsta record. Not a hipster record. A record that paints life as it is today for a lot of the working poor. And as much as we all want to act like we aren’t the working poor – truth is, most of us are living check to check with moments of glory intersparsed with notices from electric companies that the disconnect is pending. Emcees Red Pill (Detroit) and Verbal Kent (Chicago) lay some of the rawest slice of life narratives in the game today over 15 tracks produced by Apollo Brown. Think soul drenched beats with moody horns and heavy drums. We all listen to these rags to riches stories most people sell us, but this is that rags and still hoping story. The album is Ugly Heroes.
Free Mp3: Ugly Heroes – Graves (prod. Apollo Brown)
Apollo Brown is back it! His newest group with Verbal Kent and Red Pill dropped their first single today on NahRight. The track, “Graves”, is a nasty blue collar joint that lyrically stares down the reality of living in a rigged system and having to grind day after day until you’re six feet under. A heavy beat & poignant rhymes.
Free Mp3: Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson – Parkour
Motor City brothers Apollo Brown and Guilty Simpson have wasted no time pounding the pavement for Dice Game. In the past few weeks Apollo has toured Australia and New Zealand while Guilty did a lean and mean west coast run that spanned Los Angeles to Seattle before hitting the NBC/Universal lot to be on Carson Daly’s show.
Today, while our road dogs get a breather, they release the all new, non-album, bonus track “Parkour” to announce the release of their new limited edition wax (ivory vinyl w/ bonus 45 featuring two non-album cuts). This first bonus, named after the military training parkour where practitioners need to burst through an obstacle course using the terrain to gain advantage. In similar fashion, Guilty takes the terrain laid out by Apollo Brown and powers through it like a linebacker with a vengeance. The sound has a bit of an electronic tinge, something not so present on the official LP but very much welcome here.
