Baltimore emcee Substantial released his Oddisee executive produced album Home Is Where The Art Is late last year and quickly garnered acccolades from his strong worldwide fan base. Since then, Substantial has toured with yU (of Diamond District), seen the vinyl release of his record, performed at the Smithsonian in DC, and released a wildly successful tribute album to Jill Scott titled “Jackin’ Jill”. Today, Substantial wanted to share the entire collection of instrumentals from Home Is Where The Art Is with his fans. The complete instrumentals will be free for a week before heading up on itunes, so be sure and grab them now. Beats by Oddisee, Eric Lau, M-Phazes, Algorythm, and more!
Video: DXA – Ice’s Jazz
“Ice’s Jazz” is a tune with a heavy jazz influence. It started out as an experiment and was originally destined for a different project but as it came together it started to take on a life of its own and found a perfect fit with the songs DXA was currently working on. The track is an instrumental composed of a lot of different elements for your audio exploration. It is IceRocks’ ode to Gang Starr’s “DJ Premier in Deep Concentration” and Pete Rock’s “Pete’s Jazz”, hence the name. It was a way for him to display his talent as a producer and explore the instrumental world.
For the video DXA linked up with Luciano Pio of Suspect Studio to create a visual element to this instrumental experience in order to show you a little glimpse into the world of IceRocks and his interaction with the group and other artists he works with. Check it out!
Beat EP: Beatsofreen – Coloured Dreams
“Delving deep into the Dutch beat landscape, we keep the momentum flowing here at Darker Than Wax, with yet another stunner of a release from an artist who goes by the name of Beatsofreen. Hailing from Utrecht, he was brought to our attention, and we are glad that the connection led to this EP.
‘Coloured Dreams’ display the many sides of Beatsofreen, as he moves effortlessly from more traditional Dilla-esque beats to experimental forms like the intro track ‘Behind Us.’ His ability to subtly blend different instrumentations, while keeping the entire structure intact is really what caught our ears.”
The Coloured Dreams EP is now available as stream and / or Free Download on the Bandcamp page of the Darker Than Wax label.
