In March of 2015, veteran SoCal hip hop artist, Ariano, connected with hungry Portland-based producer on the grind, Jade River. After an intense week-long recording process, the duo emerged with Ink in My Eyes, a trap and sample-based project merging the roots of boom bap with today’s sonics.
Four years later, Ariano and Jade River are reigniting their chemistry and dropping a continuation of Ink in My Eyes with a new full-length project, Child Trapped in Poems.
Arguably the most emotional track off of the album is “Forever,” a raw and unfiltered look into Ariano’s own journey through fatherhood raising a son while addressing the challenges and hopes that inevitably come with the territory. Jade’s production is at times moody, yet uplifting, allowing Ariano’s vocals to glide over the music and deliver a simple desire that every parent feels in the depths of their souls…for their child to just be a better version of them. There is a buoyant undertone to the production as Ariano addresses his son about navigating the unavoidable obstacles in life and having the strength to rise above.
Midway through the track, the feel of “Forever” switches dramatically from hope to that of an aching longing, mirroring the message of Ariano missing his son while on the road and in times of turbulence in their relationship. It’s a painfully honest look at the consequences of grinding in a career that pulls you away, all in the name of providing.
“Forever” doesn’t stay mired in this angst for long though. The track then deftly returns to the hopeful, elevating feel, delivering the message that no matter what may come, everything will be OK as long as Ariano and his son hold on to each other.
“Forever” is a touching introduction into the world of Child Trapped in Poems, a perfect blend of hip hop fire and a message that touches your soul.
