Fresh off the release of his debut album “Uptown Baby“, Harlem born rapper/producer Rayne Storm returns with “Storms Coming II“, the sequel to his popular underground mixtape. The original “Storms Coming” was the first vehicle from Rayne that almost put him on the map back in the late 2000’s. Back when Soulja Boy first hit the scene using Torrent downloads to promote “Superman”, Rayne was using the internet to his advantage early on as well. “Storms Coming” was promoted heavily on the internet, back when Myspace, AIM/Yahoo Chat and artists “Message Boards” reigned supreme as social communities. Songs like “My Salvation“, “Boys On The Block“, “A Miracle” and more topped the charts on early music promotion sites like Jamwave, SoundClick, Download.com and others.
Released over a decade after the original, “Storms Coming II” is a return to form for Rayne as his dips into his bag of bars and beats for a project that delivers in both areas. The mixtape jumps right into high gear from the intro with uptempo bangers like “Still About The Benjamins” & “Automatic (Battle Remix)“, a heavy dosage of aggressive lyrics with “No Tomorrow” & “Up 2 God“, feel good songs like “My Salvation Pt 2” & “Up Up Away“, hip-hop knockers like “Scorchers” & “Revolution” and enough freestyles to keep your head knocking including “21 Freestyle” which features a rare Big L verse. Other features on the 21 track mixtape include Kid Poetry, Soulebrity, Streatz Merdah, Sunny Lucas, Jamal Skals,Path P, ManKind, King F Sorrow, Dizzy $padez, Roy Dean, Scribe The Verbalist, Fr33 Tha Sinner, Vinchi, Loudpack Dash and voice actor Joey Doe.
Original Production on Storms Coming II, unlike Uptown Baby which was fully produced by Rayne, gets handled by the combination of Roy Dean, DZ Thrilla, JayRetro, StatZ (who produced many of the hits from SC1) and of course, Rayne Storm himself. The freestyle tracks are produced by Just Blaze (“Just Fire Freestyle“), Daz Dillinger (“Fuck The Police (Ambitionz Az A Ridah Freestyle)“) & Lord Finesse (“21 Freestyle“).
All in all, Storms Coming II sounds like Harlem. It feels like walking down 125th street when The Diplomats had every car blasting pitched up samples. The production is a nod to the past while still being futuristic, a trademark of Rayne’s production style. It sounds very New York, it sounds very Harlem and it’s a must hear for anyone who loves the sound of Uptown.
“Storms Coming II” is now available exclusively on YouTube, Audiomack & Bandcamp.
