London rapper S.I.M drops off his single “Spillin”.
The song is a free-form emotional expression captured by the lyrics in the hook ‘Spillin like its liquid through our aquapourins/Say we hate women like we don’t know Lauryn’
The term ‘spillin’ showcases a release of emotion, setting up the visceral nature of the song. This track is showcasing vulnerability that lies beneath a rugged exterior that is imposed by society. This becomes a statement about S.I.M as an individual while also posing a broader contrast between the socially imposed exterior of toughness and apathy upon young Black Males and the emotional reality of how many react to their circumstances.
The smooth beat and conversational flow is deliberately placed to provoke thought and give the listener the space to digest the content. The Raw, stripped-back cover-art exemplifies this sense of nakedness as S.I.M strips peals back the veil of a confident Rapper, letting the listener in on his emotional vulnerability that lies underneath.
