ARTEMIS is a documentary (68 mins) by Sektion Red which focuses on 9 current female MC’s in UK Hip Hop, exploring various perceptions as to why there are not more prominent female voices in the genre, both on stage and behind the scenes, with some ideas as to how to rectify this in the final chapters of the film. Directed by Oliver Whitehouse, produced by Laura Green and behind the scenes filmed by Fleur Wild. Following the release of the documentary we’re releasing an a cappella rap video with each of the 9 featured artists.
Starring:
Bobbie Johnson, Genie Marie, Holly Flo Lightly, Jaz Kahina, MINX, Oracy, Seraphim, Shay D & TrueMendous.
OUR INSPIRATION:
Hip Hop is generally considered pretty misogynistic, we wanted to look into the roots of this, and to show that not all female rappers wear provocative outfits and rap about sex, some female rappers are positive role models for future generations and deserve our attention. We sat down with each artist and filmed open conversations about their perspectives on the industry and culture as a whole and their position in it.
INTERVIEWS:
From making this project I’ve learned a lot, and have a much better insight into opportunities for growth for women in the industry and understand far better why the current climate is less accommodating for women than men, I’d love to share some of my thoughts on the subject so am very available for interviews if you think it would be of interest to your audience.
OUR BACKGROUND:
Sektion Red is a music video production company and platform which has been running since 2012, we’ve accrued over 7,000 YouTube subscribers and worked with a majority of the top UK hip hop acts; the likes of Split Prophets, Leaf Dog, BVA, Stig of the Dump, as well as a few US exclusive videos with Edo .G, Chali 2Na (Jurassic 5) and Boldy James, grime artists Ghetts, Shystie and No Lay… and so on!
WHY THE NAME ‘ARTEMIS’?:
Artemis, amongst other things in ancient greek mythology is the goddess of wilderness and the hunt, as such we have a wilderness theme running throughout, with many of the interviews filmed in the wild and all of the follow up a cappella raps, the hunt being relevant to our and their hunger to achieve. In addition Artemis became the patron saint of childbirth, the protector of children, and the goddess who especially heard the appeals of women.
