One of Roach Gigz’ best qualities is his ability to balance his lighthearted nature with an underlying seriousness. In his new video for “Can I Rap,” fromRoachy Balboa 2, the follow up to Roach’s highly acclaimed Roachy Balboamixtape released earlier this year, the San Francisco Bay Area emcee sets out to answer the question posed in the song’s title. He offers a relentless three-plus minutes of chorus-free rhymes, over a sparse lunch-table beat provided by C-Loz, who handled the production of Roachy Balboa and the forthcoming sequel, pausing only briefly to catch his breath. Roach’s flow and lyrics are as unique and dynamic as they’ve ever been, and he moves effortlessly from tangent to tangent as he tackles subjects such as Doritos, interoffice relations, scalping Giants tickets in the 7th grade, and Miley Cyrus.
The location for this video makes perfect sense when one considers how important The Bay and the San Francisco Giants are to Roach’s personality. With his favorite baseball club on the verge of taking the World Series at the time of filming, director and frequent collaborator Aris Jerome fully captures the frenzied energy of the scene. “Every moment was enjoyable, just watching everybody around get into the filming and just having a good time,” Roach explains. “This is history and I just wanted to play my part in it.” The timing of the video couldn’t be better, with the San Francisco Giants’ win of the World Series
