Appearing on the recent Brown Study, the album born from the collaboration between producer Apollo Brown and emcee Boog Brown, the track “Shine”established itself as one of the more dramatic cuts, complete with pulsating handclaps and melancholy strings. In the latest incarnation of the song, a remix from Diamond District member yU, the tone is decidedly funkier.
One of the only things that is consistent over the two versions of the song is its underlying message which, appropriately enough, is to continue to shine. “Aint nobody like you / Be who you are,” Boog says both to herself and the listener. “Shine on them, baby / Don’t you know you’re a star?” yU’s verse serves to support Boog’s sentiments, especially in lines like “the law that I live by is give it my all.” Though the ambience may differ, the new beat and verse only compliment and build on the original, the all-important qualities of any good remix.
